Roy Edward Burgess, 85, of Greenup, left this earthly life to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 4, 2011, in King's Daughters Medical Center.
Roy was born on Aug. 18, 1925, in Greenup County, to the late Estel and Verna Longshore-Burgess.
Mr. Burgess was a graduate of Russell High School and was a veteran, having served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended Advance Methodist Church while he sang with the Napier Quartet and later attended the Lloyd Community Baptist Church and sang as lead singer with Gospelaires Quartet of South Point, Ohio. Roy coached the first little league baseball team in Greenup County and they won the championship that year. He was a scout master at Flatwoods, as well as a coach for the boxing clubs in Ironton, Ohio, and the Russell YMCA. Roy had a passion for sports, boating and camping and was past president of the Eastern Kentucky Good Sam Camping Club. He was a past member of the Greenup Lions Club and a member of the Elks Lodge 350 in Ashland.
Besides his mother and father, Roy was preceded in death by his grandson, Tony Burgess, and his daughter-in-law, Linda Burgess.
Mr. Burgess leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Alice Boggs-Burgess of Greenup; two sons, R. E. Burgess II of Lavalette, W.Va., and William E. Burgess and his wife, Rita, of Russell; one very special foster brother, Gene Callihan; one grandchild, Tina Withrow, and her husband, Doug; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous friends who will all miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be conducted at at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2011, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, with words of comfort spoken by Pastor Joe Carr. Burial will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East, and Military Honors will be presented by the VFW Post 8850 of Ironton.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday July 7, 2011, at the funeral home. The Elks Lodge 350 will hold an Elks Service during visitation.
