| Birth: | Dec. 5, 1898 | | Death: | Jan. 26, 1947 |  Opera Singer. Born in Del Rio, Tennessee, she was a operatic soprano nicknamed the "Tennessee Nightingale". She made her first Broadway appearance in 1920 and her operatic debut at the Metropolitan Theatre in New York City in 1928. In the 1930s and 1940s she gave concert performances throughout the United States and Europe and was active in the USO shows during World War II. She also was under contract to Columbia Pictures, for whom she made six films including "One Night of Love" (1934), for which she was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award.
