W. Leslie Mades, known as Les, 91, Washington, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011, in Washington.
Mr. Mades was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Hamburg, the son of Theodore J. Mades and wife Leona K., nee Leimkuehler.
He received his education at Hamburg Grade School and graduated from Francis Howell High School in 1937. Mr. Mades also attended Ranken Trade School, St. Louis, and Harley-Davidson School, Milwaukee, Wis. On April 30, 1946, Mr. Mades was united in marriage to Delphine M. Engemann at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington. The couple made their home in Washington. Mr. Mades served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the 496th Engineer Battalion stationed in North Africa and later Italy. He retired from Jefferson Products, Washington, after 39 years. Mr. Mades truly loved his position as a designer and builder of automated production machines. Mr. Mades was a collector and restorer of antique automobiles. He played the banjo and violin, and was a member of the St. Louis Banjo Club and other musical groups. He also was a member of the Washington Historical Society, Boone-Duden Historical Society and Washington Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Leona Mades. Mr. Mades is survived by his wife, Delphine Mades, Washington; two sons, Gary Mades and wife Sally, Washington, and Douglas Mades and wife Karen, Rochester Hills, Mich.; one daughter, Claudia Noelke and husband Larry, Washington; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. A funeral Mass was held Saturday, July 9, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Washington, with the Revs. Michael P. Boehm and Dale P. Wunderlich officiating. Burial with military honors followed in St. Francis Borgia Church Cemetery, Washington. Memorials to the Our Lady of Lourdes Building Fund or Hamburg Cemetery Association are preferred.
