FAMILY HISTORY OF CENTRAL NY, Vol III, Pg 1544 states that Samuel Lawrence Palmer was an adopted son of Mr & Mrs Norman Palmer, adopted when four and a half months old.

Samuel served as a Fifer during the Civil War, in the 23rd New York infantry. REGIMENTAL HISTORIES states that the 23rd Regiment Infantry ("Southern Tier Regiment") was organized at Elmira, New York, May 10 1861, mustered on July 2 1861, left New York for Washington, DC, July 5. It was attached to Hunter's Brigade, Division of the Potomac, to October 1861. Tours of service for the company included not only the defenses of Washington DC but also 2nd Bull Run August 30, Antietam September 16-17, Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 12-15, Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. They mustered out May 22 1863 at the expiration of term.

He died at a Soldiers' Home in Bath, New York.
