George Valentine Shirley was born 26 Aug 1890 in Quincy, Norfolk County, MA and died 15 Sep 1990 in South Yarmouth, Barstable County, MA. His parents were George Orr Shirley and Mary Moodie and his paternal grandparents were Valentine Shirley and Ann Orr. George died just 25 days after his 100th birthday.
George married Edna Peres Crockett on 25 June 1919. She was born 17 Aug 1892 and died 8 Feb 1996. George was a traveling auditor for the New Haven Railroad until he was drafted into the Army on 8 July 1918. In September 1918, he went to France with the Headquarters Company, 335th Field Artillery, 87th Division. He became a Battalion Sergeant Major. He was stationed near Chateau Rue, south of Tours. His division was never in battle, and after the Armistice they were moved to San Loubes, near Bordeaux. In March 1919 he returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged on 22 March. He was later a teller in the Norfolk County Trust Company, and his World War II draft registration said he worked for He worked for Charles E. Clapp Corp, Adams Street, Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
George and Edna had two children, George Crocket Shirley and Edna Marguerite Shirley.
