He joined the army at age 29 and served with Battery C of the 213th Field Artillery Battalion, which was shipped to the southwest Pacific to help liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation. He was awarded the good conduct medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater, Philippine Liberation and Victory ribbons.

After the war, Martinez repaired automobiles, eventually working as an auto mechanic for Sanco Motor Ford (now called Capitol Ford). He then worked for the US Forestry as a technician and retired at the age of 80.

Juan loved fishing, camping, pinon picking and enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Citizens Center.
