An American painter and caricaturist. William was the son of James Henry Beard, Sr., whom was a shipmaster on the lakes, commanded the first brig that sailed on Lake Erie. His mother, Harriet Wolcott, was the second white woman who visited the post, the wife of the commander of the fort being the first. The post would become the city of Chicago. She was a woman of considerable reading and fine natural powers. His brother, James Henry Beard, Jr., was a well-known artist. In 1856, William traveled to Italy, Germany, and Switzerland with fellow artists Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Worthington Whittredge. In 1858, William briefly settled in Buffalo, New York, helping to establish an art community that eventually culminated in the establishment of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy in 1862. William was a painter of bears and other animals. Frequently bears were his symbols for human beings. His works were both humorous and satirical of the human condition. William was twenty-two when he married

William died in 1900. For more than a century, Beard was lying in an unmarked grave. On October 15, 2002, 102 years after William Beard's death, a full-sized bronze bear monument, sculpted by Dan Ostermiller and generously donated by him to honor Beard was unveiled. This is the first new sculpture in Green-Wood in many years. (154 words)

(I'm not finished. I'm still trying to put this together.)
