| Birth: | Oct. 29, 1837 | | Death: | Nov. 19, 1910 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered the Union Army during the Civil War when he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 31st New York Volunteer Infantry on January 2, 1862. He served with the unit through the next year, and until he was tabbed for staff duty. On March 11, 1863 he was mustered out of the regiment, and mustered into the Adjutant General Department as a Captain of Volunteers. He would go on to serve duty with five different Union Generals, being an Assistant Adjutant General on the staffs of, in succession, Brigadier Generals Calvin E. Pratt, Henry D. Terry, and James B. Ricketts, and Major Generals Christopher C. Augur and Winfield Scott Hancock. Promoted to Major on July 15, 1864 and Lieutenant Colonel on January 19, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallantry during the campaign of 1864 and distinguished good conduct throughout the war". After the end of the conflict he became a United States Customs official, and served as United States Consul-General in Paris, France from 1890 to 1893. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
