Armstead Milton Alexander

U.S. Congressman. He moved to Missouri in 1848, worked as a blacksmith and participated in gold mining in California in 1849. Returning to Missouri, he graduated from Bethany College Virginia, in 1853, engaged in business interest and served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced the practice of law in Paris, Missouri. He was prosecuting attorney of Monroe County, (1872-76) and a delegate to the Missouri State constitutional convention in 1875. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 58. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
