Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered the Civil War as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a three-month enlistment regiment raised at the start of the War. After the unit's muster out, he was commissioned a Captain in the 53rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He then joined the staff of Major General Winfield S. Hancock as his Provost Marshal before being promoted to Colonel and commander of the 53rd Pennsylvania. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services".
