US Congressman, US Senator. A native of Bakersfield, California, Engle graduated from Chico State College in 1930 and earned a degree in law from the Hastings College of Law in 1933. In 1934 he was appointed district attorney of Tehama County serving until 1942. In 1943 he was elected to serve in the California State Senate. Following the death of Congressman Harry Englebright on May 13, 1943, Engle was elected in his place to serve in the United States House of Representatives representing California's 2nd District until 1959. In 1959 he was elected to the United States Senate where he served until his death from brain cancer at the age of 52.
