He died April 9, 1931, at Yoncalla, Oregon, aged 87 years, 1 month and 22 days, where he had lived for the previous twelve years. His body was shipped by rail to Barron and interred there beside the remains of his wife Eunice in Wayside Cemetery on April 15, 1931. His G.A.R. style gravestone is inscribed "John R. John was married twice with his first marriage June 15, 1864, to Elmira Vandenberg, who died after a few years, apparently childless.

On April 4, 1870, John was united in marriage to Eunice Rebecca Davis, at Maiden Rock, Pierce County, Wisconsin, who was the mother of all his children. Eunice was born October 22, 1841, in New York, daughter of David Davis, and a mother, name unknown, both born in that state. She died January 31, 1915, in Barron, aged 73 years, 3 months and 9 days and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery. Their children were:

Jonathan Almon born 28 Apr 1870
George Lester 25 Jun 1872
Ella May 23 May 1875
Mary Alvira 6 Jun 1878
Eunice Adella 3 Jun 1881

Of the above children, it was reported on Friday, December 5, 1890, in The Barron County Shield, Barron, Wisconsin, that Jonathan A. Edes and Miss Lulu C. Blackburn were married at the residence of the bride's parents in the town of Dallas, by Reverend G. A. Taylor.

Eunice had previously been married to Martin Kelly, who was killed in action during the war while serving in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Reserves, also known as the Bucktails Regiment. Their one known child was Dolly Kelly, born 1861 in Pennsylvania.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, John Edes was listed as a 37 year old sawmill worker living in Dunn Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin, with his 38 year old wife Eunice and their children: Almond J., age 10; George L., age 7; Ella M., age 5; and 2 year old Mary A. Edes. Also living with the family was Eunice's daughter by Martin Kelly, 19 year old Dolly Kelly, and Eunice's brother, 30 year old John K. Davis.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, John Edes was listed as a 56 year old sawmill laborer living in Hayward Township, Sawyer County, Wisconsin, with his 57 year old wife Eunice and their son George Edes, a 27 year old manufacturer. They had been married 31 years, lived in a rented house and were the parents of six children of whom one was deceased.

In the 1910 U.S. Census, John Edes was listed as a 66 year old farmer living in Barron Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 67 year old wife Enuice R. and their 38 year old son, George L. Edes, a railroad mail clerk. They had been married 40 years, owned their farm free and clear, and were the parents of six children of whom two were deceased.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, John Edes was listed as 75 years old and living in Yoncalla Precinct, Pacific Highway, Douglas County, Oregon, with the family of his son George composed of: George Edes, age 47; his 26 year old wife Ruth Edes and their two children, 4 year old Harold Edes and 3 year and 10 months old Dorothy Edes. George owned his house with a mortgage.

John enlisted September 5, 1864, at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to serve one year as a Private in the 44th Wisconsin Infantry. On December 1, 1864, he was mustered into Federal service with Company E at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received 1/3 of his $100 enlistment bounty, and was listed as a 5'8" tall laborer, with light hair, blue eyes and a light complexion born in Lisbon, New York. On the front of his enlistment papers he was listed as 20 year of age and on the back as 27 years of age.

On August 28, 1865, John was mustered out of Federal service with Company E at Paducah, Kentucky, with a total service of 11 months and 24 days. On the muster out roll it was noted that he had retained one musket and accouterments at a cost of $6.00.

After his discharge, John returned to Wisconsin, living in various locations there until he moved to Yoncalla, Douglas County, Oregon, in about 1919.
