Graveside services for Mrs. Glennis Letha Abernathy age 101 of Bonham will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday July 6, 2011 at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, Tx. Mrs. Abernathy passed away Saturday July 2, 2011 at the Seven Oaks Nursing Home in Bonham.
Mrs. Abernathy was born June 18, 1910 in El Reno, Ok. to parents W.C. & Phebe Wood fin (Yarbrough) Todd. She married Ebber (Eb) Abernathy in 1930. At 18 years of age she took the Oklahoma Teachers Exam and started teaching in a small one room school near Wynnewood, Ok. in 1929. She also taught in Garvin County country schools until moving to Pauls Valley, Ok. in 1950. She lacked 6 hours receiving her Masters of Education from East Central State College in Ada, Ok. when she retired from the Pauls Valley School District in 1972. Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley, Ok. for over 60 years until moving to Bonham in 2001 to be closer to her family.
Survivors include five nieces & nephews: Donna Miller and husband Joe David of Bonham, Joe Altom and wife Merelee of McKinney, Tx., Bob Altom and wife Karen of Stanwood, Washington, Carol Carlgren of Azle,Tx., Linda Scorza and husband Barry of Garland, Tx., 11 gr. nieces and nephews, 19 gr.gr. nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Bud Abernathy of Pauls Valley, Ok. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Eb Abernathy, sisters Lois West, Mozelle Altom and brother Louis Todd.
No visitation is scheduled but Mrs. Abernathy will lie in state Tuesday July 5, 2011 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham.
