One of ten children of Bishop Henry Beard Delany and Nanny Logan, she was born in Virginia in 1889. Sarah, along with her sister, were thrust into the national limelight in the last decade of their lives. With her sister Bessie (Annie Delany) and journalist Amy Hill Hearth, a book was published, "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First One Hundred Years" (1993), which found itself on The New York Times best-seller list. The book recounted the sisters' experieces growing up in the segregated South and later in New York. Their story later was made into a play that toured the country. The sisters published a another book, "The Delany Sisters' Book of Everyday Wisdom" (1994). After Bessie's death in 1995, Sadie wrote a third book called "On My Own." Sarah Delaney died at age 109 at her Mount Vernon, New York home. In April 1999, the Delany sisters story was made into a movie which starred Ruby Dee and Diahann Caroll. (bio by: Curtis Jackson)
