Archibald was the son of John Brown & Elizabeth Neil Plumlee. On 25 Dec 1817 he married Bertha Ruth O'Dell.

They were the parents of 13 children-Elizabeth Anne (Miller), Abigail/Abagail (Miller), Hannah (Clancy), Clinton, Jobe, Sarah Elizabeth (Eads), Ruth (Price), Nancy Rosetta (Welch), Cinderella (Kendall), Lydia (Hardy), George Washington, and Andrew Jackson.

Archibald fought in the War of 1812 serving as a soldier in the 3rd Regiment, West Tennessee Militia Infantry under Colonel James Raulston.
