Pharoah. The eighth ruler of the twentieth dynasty, he oversaw a country beset with civil problems including a wave of tomb robberies, Libyan marauders, and high grain prices which led to shortages among the necropolis workers. Power seemed to have been split between Amenhotep, the high priest, who exercised all religious and many governmental functions in Thebes, while Ramses remained in his capital. His public works were limited and focused largely on the sun temple of Heliopolis in Lower Egypt, his mark is also found on a in the Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. He is credited with a reign of 18 Years and 4 months. Upon his death he was laid to rest in his tomb, now designated KV6. The tomb was robbed in antiquity, and both Roman and Greek graffiti has been found on the tomb walls. In 1881, the pharaoh's mummy was found in the Deir el-Bahri cache. (bio by: Iola)
