U.S. Congressman. He served as a commissioner of the Elbert County Academy in 1808, as a member served in the Georgia State Senate (1817-19) and was a Major General of the 4th Division, Georgia Militia, (1817-24). In 1821, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, reelected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth through the Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. Appointed in 1834, as an agent to Seminole Indians, to superintend the removal of Seminoles from Florida, he was killed at age 54 by band of Seminoles led by War Chief Osceola.
