Orchestra Conductor, Composer. He was nicknamed, the 'Statesman of Canadian Music.' He directed the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1956, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir from 1942 to 1957. From 1927 until 1952, he served as Dean of the Music Faculty at the University of Toronto. His works include, "Sketches For String Quartet" and "Song Of Deliverance." He was editor of the book, "Music In Canada" (1955). He was knighted by King George V of England in 1935.
