Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida was named in his honor. When he came to St. Augustine in 1883 he found the city beautiful but lacking any real transportation or hotel facilities. In 1885 he began building the Hotel Ponce de Leon, which was an instant success with America's wealthy. He also purchased the Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Halifax Railroad which brought tourist's easily to the city. He would go on to extend the railroad to Miami. Henry Flagler died of injuries suffered when he fell down a flight of stairs in his summer home, and was buried in the Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine which he had built in 1890 to honor his daughter who had died the year before. He is buried on the top floor next to his daughter, granddaughter and first wife Mary.
