Born to Rhode Island Senator Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich, he was the younger brother of Rhode Island Congressman Richard Steere Aldrich and uncle to 41st United States Vice President Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1910. After more than a decade as a successful lawyer he switched his profession to banking. He became the President of Chase Manhattan Bank in 1930 and served in that capacity until 1934, when he assumed the role of Chairman of the Board. He was a staunch supporter of Great Britain, and helped secure their first loan after World War II. In 1953 he was appointed to be the United States Ambassador to Great Britain by President Eisenhower, serving from 1953 to 1957. (bio by: Matthew Fatale)
