He served as an officer in the United States Army during the War of 1812, serving much of his enlistment on the staff of Major General Winfield Scott, and rising to the rank of Major. Elected Mayor of Detroit, Michigan, he served in that office from 1827 to 1828. The next year he was elected to represent the Michigan Territory as a Delegate to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1829 to 1831.
