Robert Stuart/Stewart is my 3rd great-grandfather. The Parish Register: "1785 February 20 John Stewart and Mary Buchanan, his wife in Ruskachan, had a child baptised, called Robert.

Born in a croft between King's House Hotel at Balquhidder and Strathyre.
In 1807, when 22 years of age, he left Scotland went to Montreal to be employed as a clerk and to join his uncle, David Stuart, one of the agents of the Northwest Fur Co. and came to New York in July 1810. September 6, 1810 he sailed, with his uncle David Stuart, around the Horn to Astoria, and on July 29, 1812 Robert Stuart left Astoria for St. Louis, where he arrived April 30, 1813 - a distance he computed as 3,768 miles. He returned to New York June 23, 1813, and his marriage took place there a month later to my 3rd Greatgrandmother.
In 1817 the Stuarts moved to Michilimacinac, Michigan, where Robert Stuart was Agent for the American Fur Co. He retired from that in June 1834 and moved to Detroit with his family and aged uncle, David Stuart.
Robert went to Chicago in 1845, where he became Secretary of the Illinois and Michigan Canal Co. He died in Chicago, Oct. 29, 1848.
He had a 9th child named David Stuart, Br.Gen. Memorial #5892354
Politician. He served as Michigan's State Treasurer from 1840 to 1841. He was also an early explorer and fur trader. Also business partner to John Jacob Astor for many years.
