Author. Born in Ireland, she wrote such novels as, "Under The Net" (1954), "A Severed Head" (1961), "The Bell" (1958), "The Sandcastle" (1957), "The Red And The Green" (1965), "The Time Of The Angels" (1965), "The Unicorn" (1963), "The Black Prince" (1973), "The Sea, The Sea" (1978), and "Metaphysicsms As A Guide To Morals" (1992). In 1987 she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire. In 1996 she was diagnosed with Alzheimers, but with sheer determination and the help of her husband, she fought the disease, but lost. She died on February 8, 1999, at age 79. Her brain was removed and donated to medical science, so that they may study it, her body was cremated. (bio by: K)
