Charles Lee Jenkins was born 1865 in Cokey Twp, Edgecombe County, NC, the 7th of 8 known children (5 boys/3 girls) born to wealthy planter Josiah D. Jenkins (1810-1878), and his (2nd) wife found as Barbara/Barsheba/Abashia Daughtry (ca. 1826-1876). It is not known if she was the widow Daughtry when she married Jenkins, or whether Daughtry was her maiden name.

Charles was the paternal grandson of Dempsy Jenkins (1773-1822) and Mary Perry who came to Edgecombe County from Hertford County; and gr-grandson of Andrew "Dew" Jenkins (1751-1804) and Mildred Davis; and gr-gr grandson of Henry Jenkins (ca. 1725-1807) and Martha Dow/Dew.

His father, Josiah Jenkins, had married (1st) to Cinderella "Rilla" Hopkins in 1832 and by her had 3 sons: Capt. Frederick Hopkins Jenkins (1836-1862), who died in the Civil War; John McGilbra Jenkins (1837-1911) of Tarboro; and Pvt. Joseph Van Buren Jenkins (1840-1861), who died of typhoid fever while in serve with the CSA. Josiah married (2nd) on July 8, 1852 to Barbara/Barsheba, and they would have 8 children together.

Charles was 11 years old when his mother died in 1876; and he was orphaned by age 13 when his father died in 1878. He then went to live with his older sister in Cokey Twp, Sarah "Sallie" Jenkins, who had married wealthy farmer, Patrick Henry Edge.

He would later attend the University of North Carolina (UNC) and graduate from their medical school, and by 1900 would be working for the State Hospital for the Insane (later called Dorothea Dix Hospital) in Raleigh, where he remained until his retirement, later become Superintendent of the hospital. During those years, he was also a professor and UNC.

In 1895, the 30-yr old physician married 22-year old Martha Ann Knight of Edgecombe. The couple would reside in Raleigh, on the grounds of the hospital, for many years and would become parents to 4 known children:

* Mildred M. Jenkins (ca. 1903)
* Joseph K. Jenkins (1904-1991)
* Samuel L. Jenkins (ca. 1906)
* Edward Lee Jenkins (1906-1981)

It is not known by this researcher whether Dr. Jenkins remained in Raleigh, or retired home to Edgecombe County. He died in 1932 at about age 67 and is buried here at Greenwood. His wife of 37 years survived him 38 years, passing in 1970 at about age 97.
