The Andover Townsman – June 19, 1896 – Vol. 9 – No. 36 – Page 5

Mrs. Phebe, widow of the late J C. Goldsmith, fell asleep June 12th, after a few days sickness, at the home of Mrs. C. A. Shattuck, Main St., aged 89 years, 2 months 13 days.

Deceased was a remarkably well preserved woman for her age, both physically and mentally. Time had silvered the luxuriant hair, and slightly bowed the slender figure; but the intellectual faculties, the warm sympathies, the true and loving heart, no stress of time, change, or sorrow had impaired. She was a person of refined taste, honor, and good sense. Her love and appreciation of books and flowers were the safety valve that helped her over many rough places in the ears and livelihood of her children during the long years of widowhood.

At her quiet home in Scotland District her well-kept bed of rare varieties of plant and shrub were noticeably attractive for their wealth of bloom and foliage, long after she had passed the four score years. She always made home pleasant, and enjoyed a close companionship with her children, growing nearer and dearer as she approached life's sunset. At the age of 88 she attended to the household duties for herself, and two sons, and reluctantly gave up the charge last October.

She was the mother of seven children, all of whom attained middle age. when the first death occurred she was in her 83th year. She was born at the Russell homestead March 30, 1807 and always resided in Scotland District. Previous to her last illness she had not required the service of a physician but once, for half a century.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p. M. by Rev. F.W. Klein. The casket, a drab broad-cloth, was profusely covered with exquisite floral tributes. Interment in South Cemetery.

She leaves five children, Mrs. James H. Goldsmith. Mrs. C.A. Shattuck of Andover; Mrs. W.H. Greene, Mrs. W.G. Parker of Ballardvale, Mrs. George K. Dodge of Ipswich.
