Joel Richard Wilson, 81, passed away Christmas night, December 25, 2009 in Fullerton, California of complications due to age. Before moving to LaHabra, California more than a year ago, Joel lived in Hurricane, Utah. Joel was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 15, 1928, the third child and first son of Joel Ricks Wilson and Rose Mildred Taylor Wilson.
Joe was reared in Salt Lake City surrounded by his five brothers and sisters. He loved the outdoors and scouting as a boy and throughout his life. As an adult he earned the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Joe served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Joe enjoyed a career in the service station industry as well as painting cars and other mechanical work, but his passion was driving. He drove long haul trucks and commercial tour busses for many years.
Joe married La Dean Joan Despain February 11, 1950. They are the parents of three children. Later they divorced. Joe married Bonnie Patrick Wilson, thirty-nine years ago on June 29, 1970. They had two boys together. In 1983 Joel and Bonnie were sealed in the St. George Temple. He served in church positions in local wards as well as the Manti Temple for three years.
Joe was happy to be a father and grandfather and enjoyed being with the children. Over the years the family resided in West Jordan and Sandy, Utah and then Henderson, Nevada. Later on they lived in Manti and Hurricane, Utah and LaHabra, California.
Always interested in people, Joe has been a popular bus driver for senior citizens taking them on tours of the country. Joel enjoyed fishing, golfing, and playing poker or pool with his friends. He volunteered at the Dixie Care and Share in Hurricane, Utah.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Rose Wilson, and his sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Frank Johnson.
Joe is survived by: His wife of 39 years, Bonnie Patrick Wilson, Children: Brent (Cindy) Wilson, West Jordan, Utah; Randy (Natalie) Wilson, Winnemucca, Nevada; Cindy (David) Rogerson, Riverton, Utah; Patrick (Tammy) Wilson, Henderson, Nevada; Dave (Tomoko) Wilson, La Habra, California; and Step-children: Debra (Eugene) Maynard, Sandy, Utah; Richard Watson, Salem, Oregon; Leeann (TW) Carrington, Hurricane, Utah; and Elaine Smith; 33 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; Sisters: Ruth (Charlie) Ryser, Salt Lake City; Rhea Rhodes, Corrales, New Mexico; and Brothers: Ezra Taylor (Pat) Wilson, Salt Lake City, Utah; Blaine Ricks (Joyce) Wilson, Santa Clara, Utah; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service to be held in Hurricane, Utah, Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hurricane Fourteenth Ward, 272 South 700 West, Hurricane, Utah. (Driving directions: From I 15, take the Utah-9 Exit 16 towards Zion National Park, merge onto Utah-9/West State Street toward Hurricane, turn right on 700 West/Airport Road (Chevron Station) and travel to the first church building on the right.)
