| Birth: | Feb. 8, 1824 Gouverneur St. Lawrence County New York, USA | | Death: | Feb. 9, 1886 Chicago Cook County Illinois, USA |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a law teacher when he enlisted in the Union Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 45th Illinois Regiment in November, 1861. He was promoted Captain in February, 1862 and appointed aide-de-camp on the staff of General Ulysses S. Grant. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Shiloh by riding between camps with orders to General Lewis Wallace to bring his troops to the field and was promoted Major in November, 1862. He served on General Grant's staff until the siege of Vicksburg, then acted as provost-marshal-general of the departments of the Tennessee and with headquarters at Columbus, Kentucky. In early 1864, he returned to General Grant's staff as military secretary at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served until he resigned due to health conditions in August, 1864. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was elected a Illinois County judge in 1877, serving until his death.
