Hockey Hall of Fame Professional Referee/Linesman. Born in Carleton Place, Ontario, Smeaton excelled in football, baseball, and basketball, but his first love was hockey. He was twice offered to go pro, but he refused both times, deciding to referee the game instead of playing it. His first game was with th Canadiens-Wanderers. In 1910 he began working for the Sun Life Association of Canada in Montreal until he retired in 1954. In 1913 he was appointed as an official to the National Hockey League Association by Frank Calder. In 1916 he joined the war effort serving with the 11th Canadian Siege Battery, earning him the Military Medal, returning to Canada in 1919. Frome 1930 to 1931 he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Quakers. In 1937 he retired from the sport of hockey. Later in 1946 he was named as co-trustee alongside P.D. Ross of the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
