| Birth: | Dec. 14, 1807 | | Death: | Aug. 18, 1885 |  Politician/Journalist. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Hincks immigrated to York, Ontario, in 1831. The city of York later became Toronto in 1834. In 1835 he became the manager of the People's Bank, and in 1838 he became founder and editor of the Toronto Examiner. In 1841 he entered politics and served as the Joint Premier of the United Province of Canada from 1851 to 1854, Inspector General from 1842 to 1843, and 1848 to 1851, Governor of Barbados and the Windward Islands from 1855 to 1862, Governor of British Guyana from 1862 to 1869, and the Minister of Finance from 1869 to 1873 in the government of Sir John A. MacDonald. He was knighted in 1869. (bio by: K)
