Off For California
"Mr. W.G. Kitzmiller of Canton, Mr. V.S. Buckins of Massillon, and their families, accompanied by Miss Eliza Matthews of New Philadelphia, left on Monday for California."
Valentine Steckel was the second child of John Buckius (1773-1849) and Elizabeth Anna Sims (1774-1830).
He married twice: Eva Maria Kitzmiller in 1824 with whom he had 7 children, and Judith Longenecker in 1837 with whom he had 5 children.
From an old memoir written about Valentine's father, John Buckius:
"Valentine married, in Canton, Miss Maria Kitzmiller (sister of the wife of the subject), and she died in Canton, her husband subsequently marrying Judith Ann Longenecker, who likewise died in Canton. At the time of the gold excitement in California in 1849 or 1850, Valentine Buckius accompanied by three of his grown children [William, Sarah, John C., and Mariah], went to that state and there passed the reminder of his life."
