MARY CARLSTED
(Residence, Section 7, Township 53, Range 15, near Huntsville. Mrs. Carlsted is the widow of Christian Carlsted, who died on the farm where she now resides November 18, 1877. She was born in Bavaria, June 26, 1839, and was a daughter of Gotleib P. Klink, of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Mrs. Carlsted was reared in her native country, and when 20 years of age came to America with her brother, Philip Klink, their parents having previously died in the old country. Two years after her arrival in the United States, on the 9th of November, 1861, she was married to Mr. Carlsted. He was born in Prussia in 1836, and was therefore three years her senior. When he was 13 years of age, in 1849, he came to the New World, locating at first in Ohio. Later along he came to Missouri, and finally located in Randolph county. Here he met and married Miss Klink, the subject of this sketch, as stated above. After their marriage they settled on the farm where she now resides. Mrs. Carlsted has a good farm of over 200 acres, and she and her sons are engaged in stock-raising;. Her husband left her five children: Sallie, now Mrs. John A. Burton ; William W., Florence S., Cassie D. and Mary C. Mrs. Carlsted and her children are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.

Mary (Anna Maria) (Klink) Carlstead was born June 25, 1839 in Nordinglen, The United Kingdom of Bavaria, (Germany). She was the daughter of Gottlieb Phillip Klink and Jacobina (Ulrich/Woolridge) Klink of Bavaria, Germany.

Mary (Klink) Carlstead was educated in a young ladies school before coming to the U.S. at the age of 18. After the death of both of her parents, she came to the U.S. and lived with her brother John Phillip Klink who had come to the U.S. three years earlier. Phillip and his wife Susan (Belsher) Klink lived at Glasgow, Missouri. Phillip took training and was a baker with his own shop. He later became a farmer. They later moved to Randolph County near Huntsville. Phillip was also a soldier, serving as a Private for the Union in the Civil War in Company C of the 46th Regiment E.M.M.

Marriage and Children
Two years after moving near Huntsville, Mary married Christian Carlstead on November 9, 1861.

Mary and Christian had five children:

Sarah "Sallie" (Carlstead) Burton (b 1863 or 1864) Married John A. Burton, Jr. in May, 1872 in Delaware, IN. They lived in Missouri before settling in Minneapolis, Ward 2, Henniphen, Minnesota. John was born 1857 in KY, father born in NC, mother born in KY. Children of Sarah and John Burton:
-Beulah (Burton) Pierce (born 1883 in Huntsville, Missouri) (married Clinton E. Pierce (born 1883) Married on 12-30-1918 at Billings, Yellowstone, Montana. Clinton's father is D.C. Pierce, and mother is Mary (Lovelan)Pierce.
-Florence Burton (born 1885 in Minnesota)
-Mary Elizabeth (Burton) Crassweller (born 1888 in Minnesota, d 2-12-1926 in Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota) Married Harold D. Crassweller.

Christine Carlstead Van Deventer (b 4-25-1878, d 1946)

Mary and Christian Carlstead lived on their farm near Huntsville, Missouri until Christian's death. After Christian's death, Mary continued to live on the farm and raised sheep and crops. Mary later moved to Salisbury, Missouri.

About Mary's Children
Sarah Carlstead married John A. Burton, and they were the parents of Beulah, Florence and Mary Jane Burton.

William Carlstead married Betty Oldham, and they were the parents of Karleen and Johnnie Carlstead. After Betty passed away, William married Addie Wagner, and they had one son, Oscar G. Carlstead.

Florence S. Carlstead married Nathaniel Newton Allen, and they were the parents of Mary Roe Allen, William Edward Allen, Norvell Christian Allen, Nathaniel Newton Allen, Jr., Christine Allen and Henry Ehrhardt Allen. Florence was also stepmother to Ross Clearman Allen whose mother Emma Allen passed away a few years before Florence was married to Nathaniel Newton Allen.

Cassie D. Carlstead did not marry.

Christine Carlstead married A.D. (Archibald Duke) Van Deventer (b 11-26-1877, d 5-15-1955). Uncle Duke Van Deventer was the son of Presley Darns Van Deventer (b 2-6-1839, d 11-16-1894) and Elizabeth Chowning (b 1-18-1844, d 3-1-1931). Uncle Duke's brothers and sisters were Nanny Loving, Sallie Blanche, Thomas Chowning and William Russel Van Deventer. The Van Deventer family lines trace back to New Amsterdam Utrecht, Netherlands and County Kent, England. There were several physicians in the Van Deventer line. Christine and Duke Van Deventer had one son, Dr. William Carlstead Van Deventer (b Oct 27, 1908 in Salisbury, MO). William married Irene Gibson, the daughter of Frank Gibson and Sally Powell. Dr. William Carlstead Van Deventer had one son, Frank Gibson Van Deventer. Son Frank married Sally Margaret Crow of Louisville, KY in Michigan on 6-20-1959 (Children Matthew White Van Deventer b 9-17-1964, Sarah Elizabeth Van Deventer b 12-4-1967). Starting in 1953, William was a Professor of Biology and Head of the Department, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1968, Dr. William Carlstead Van Deventer received the 61st Science Education Award given by Science Education Journal to America's most distinguished science educators.
