Col George William Byrd
Birth: 1730
Richmond County
Virginia, USA
Death: 1825
Yancey County
North Carolina, USA

Col. George William Byrd lies in The Byrd Cemetery (his headstone was moved) which is just across from Byrd Branch Cemetery. He is the son of William Byrd and husband of Margaret Mary Ann "Annie" Hutson (sometimes spelled Hudson). George William Byrd served for The State of Virginia in the Revolutionary War in the Militia. He guarded the transfer of funds in gold from the French from Lafayette to General Washington and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.

Col. Byrd married Margaret Mary "Annie" Hutson [Hudson] in 1778 and their first children were born in Virginia. Based on Revolutionary Army accounts, Col. Byrd used his war service money to buy land in North Carolina. About 1796, he and his family migrated to the western frontier of North Carolina, settling in the Jack's Creek area of what is now Yancey County where they lived out their lives. Our Byrd family legend is that Margaret "Annie" was sent to live with relatives in Charleston, South Carolina to keep them apart. Col. Byrd followed her and they were married at her aunt's home in Charlestown (Charleston), South Carolina.

Col. George William Byrd died in 1825 and wife "Annie", who never remarried, reared their children alone and remained in the Jack's Creek area until her death. Son William Kimsey served in the War of 1812 as Pvt. for the 3rd NC Militia; George and Annie's graves are located at the The Byrd Family Cemetery in Jacks Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina (about 100 yards behind the family home).

The children of George William and Margaret Mary Ann "Annie" Hutson are:

1. William Kimsey Byrd (North Carolina)
2. Rev. Samuel Dempsey Byrd (North Carolina)
3. George Washington Byrd (North Carolina)
4. Suzannah Byrd Miller (North Carolina)
