George W. Thompkins
Birth: Apr. 9, 1842
Death: Feb. 23, 1934

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Company F, 124th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia on March 25, 1865. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 49th Alabama Infantry (C.S.A.) from an officer who, with colors in hand, was rallying his men". His Medal was awarded to him on April 6, 1865. He was one of five 124th New York soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for their bravery during the Civil War (the others being Sergeant Thomas W. Bradley, Private Archibald Freeman, Private Nathan M. Hallock and 1st Lieutenant Lewis S. Wisner). (bio by: Russ Dodge)
