Former Member of State Board of Control Is Pneumonia Victim
Published: Wednesday, 07 Mar 1934, The Charleston Gazette

James S. Lakin, 70, a former president of the state board of control, died yesterday afternoon at a Charleston hospital of pneumonia. He became ill a week ago and was removed to the hospital when physicians pronounced his condition critical. Mr. Lakin's family was at the bedside at the time of his death.

Mr. Lakin was financial advisor for all state-supported institutions of West Virginia for almost a quarter of century. He was 70 years old March 1.

Mr. Lakin was a member of the state board of control from the time it was created in 1909 until June 30, 1933 when he retired under a reorganization by the new Democratic administration. He was president of the board most of the time.

A few hours after Mr. Lakin's death, the legislature paid tribute to his "distinguished service to the state."

A resolution was adopted saying he served with "distinction and credit" during the 34 years he was a member of the board, guiding the development of the various state institutions "by his wise counsel and business-like administration."

James Sonsome Lakin was born at Moundsville March 1, 1864, the son of Calvin H. and Catherine Finney Lakin. He was a direct descendant of Abraham Lakin, who was granted title deeds for a tract of land in Frederick county, Maryland from King George of England. The deeds have remained in the Lakin family continuously.

He was educated at the Fairmont State Normal college and Ohio Wesleyan university. For a number of years he engaged in the mercantile and timber business with headquarters at Terra Alta. He had been a member of the Republican executive committee of Preston county.

Mr. Lakin retired as president of the board shortly after former Governor Conley assumed office in 1929 but remained as a member until his term expired last June. He was succeeded by H. N. Bradley, who was appointed by Conley, but Bradley also retired under the Democratic reorganization.

Upon his retirement from public service, Mr. Lakin gave his attention to the Lakin advertising company in which he was largely interested. He is survived by his widow and one son and two daughters, James O. Lakin, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Ray and Mrs. Florence Katherine Deveny, all of Charleston.

Funeral services are to be conducted tomorrow afternoon at the First Methodist church. The Rev. Robert Bagnell, D. D., is to officiate. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial park.
