Lydia Iris Whitney Springer, 95, of Rutland and formerly of Shrewsbury, passed away on June 29, 2011, at The Pines at Rutland, following a long illness.

She was born in Wells on September 13, 1915, the daughter of Dwight and Iola (Westcott) Whitney.

She married Craig L. "Jimmy" Springer on November 3, 1934.

Lydia worked several jobs throughout her life, but was most fulfilled by delivering food with the "Meals on Wheels" program, which she did well into her 80s.

She loved to do many things, but her favorites included listening to country music, going to square dances, NASCAR races and racing her own cars.

She is survived by three children, Neil Springer and wife Hannah of West Rutland, Doug Springer and wife Saundra of Hydeville and Roberta Bentley of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1988, as well as brothers, Kenneth and Harold Whitney, stepbrother Ray Mallory and granddaughter Gail Champagne.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial will follow in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet.

Friends may call on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
