Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A 1857 graduate of the United States Military Academy, he was serving as a 1st Lieutenant and regimental quartermaster of the 3rd United States Regular Artillery at the outbreak of the Civil War. He then served on the staff of Brig. General Henry J. Hunt as an Acting Assistant Inspector General before being transferred over to the Volunteer Artillery service. He joined the 1st New York Volunteer Artillery, rising to its Lieutenant Colonel. At that rank, he served as Inspector of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 9, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the recent operations resulting in the fall of Richmond, Va., and the surredner of the insurgent army under General Robert E. Lee". He remained in the Regular Army after the war, retiring with the rank of Major in 1887.
