Son of Abraham and Ann (Welsheimer) Dean. Was brought to Polk County about age 4. Served in the Civil War, Company C, 23rd Iowa Infantry; discharged as Sergeant. Married Sarah A Blatchley on 1 May 1866. Parents of eight children: Nellie, James C, Anna, Susan, Jerome, Mable, Grant, and John Logan.
