Mr. James "Sonny" Newsome, age 71 of Baxley, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in the Serenity Place in Dublin after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, and after high school enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of Vietnam, and later retired as a sergeant first class. After retirement he lived in West Palm Beach, Florida for many years, and moved back to Georgia in 2000. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by two wives, Wilma Broyles Newsom and Betty A. Newsome; one, James Otto Newsome; his parents, Otto and Annie Mae Brannen Newsome, and a sister, Donnell Peebles.
Mr. Newsome is survived by one son, Danny R. Newsome and wife Barbara; one grandson, Danny R. Newsome, II all of Savannah; three step-grandchildren, Rhonda Aiken and Wanda Douglas of savannah, and Tonya Sanderson of Brooklet; six nieces including Mary Collins and husband Earnest of Reidsville, and Betty Harris of Winoker, and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 2nd at 11:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Taylor Merritt officiating. Interment will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5:00 until 7:00.
