U.S. Congressman, Maine Governor. Working as a clerk in the mercantile establishment, he studied law, was admitted to bar and was a clerk of the Waldo County Courts, (1824-36). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. Not a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Democrat, the 20th Governor of Maine, serving (1844-47). After his term, he served as commissioner of customs in the United States Treasury Department, (1853-58) and was the Sixth Auditor of the Treasury, (1866-69). Retiring from public service in 1880, he died at age 80 the following year. Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General John Francis Anderson, was his son.
