She was married to William Bidwell Tait on June 22, 1898 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The couple had no children. Mary Eileen died one year, two months after their marriage.
Excerpt from Obituary in the Dundalk Herald, Dundalk, Ontario:
". . . When Mary left Inistioge between six and seven years ago little did we think as we said good bye that it meant forever on earth but 'God moves in a mysterious way' and we remember though we cannot understand, 'He doeth all things well.' The deceased previous to her departure was a much esteemed member of the Choir also of the Church and Epworth League and the sad news of her death was not only a severe shock to parents and relatives but to the whole community . . . Very much sympathy is felt for the bereaved friends and for the sorrowing young husband who accompanied the remains from Vancouver. . ."
After her untimely death in 1899, she was buried with her mother, Margaret (Scott) Johnston, in Flesherton Cemetery, Artemesia Township, Grey County, Ontario. Her father, Christopher Johnston (1841-1925), and seven other family members are also buried in the family plot.
Tragically, Mary's sister Jane Ann (Johnston) Taylor, passed just one month, eight days later.
