US Congressman. He was elected to two separate, non-consecutive terms representing two different Pennsylvania Districts in the United States House of Representatives. Served his first term representing the 25th District from 1861 to 1863. Losing his bid for re-election, he then joined the Union Army as a Paymaster, serving until the end of the war. He was then elected to represent the 24th District, serving from 1875 to 1877.
