Retired Cabinet Maker Dies at 86
John Z. Morin, 86, of 133 Park St., prominent in Sacred Heart Church and its societies for many years and well-known skilled cabinet maker and upholsterer who retired in 1962, died unexpectedly at his home this morning.
Born at Iberville, Canada, on May 7, 1881, he was a son of Medard and Catherine (Messier) Morin. His schooling had been received in Canada. He married the former Adeline Breault June 11, 1901 at St. Sebastion, Canada and they moved to Bennington in 1905.
Mr. Morin had conducted his own upholstering and cabinet making business at 133 Park St. since he came here. The demand for his services was far beyond his accommodation and his expertness in his trade was known over a wide area. He retired in 1962.
He was a devout member of Sacred Heart parish and had served as an usher there for 45 years. He was a charter member of the League of the Sacred Heart, and also a member of Sacred Heart Holy Name Society.
Affliated with the Catholic Order of Foresters, he had been financial secretary for seven years and had been a member of the old Bugle and Drum Corps of the COF. For 12 years, he served on the state board of the Vermont Court of Catholic Foresters.
A member of St. Jean the Baptist Society, he had been its financial secretary and treasurer for 40 years. He also was a lifetime member of Bennington Lodge of Elks.
Mr. and Mrs. Morin had observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1951. She died Dec 26, 1964.
Surivors are six daughters; Mrs. Catherine Roberts of Schenectady, N.Y.; Mrs. Cornelius (Irene) O'Grady of Norwalk, Conn.; Miss Alice Morin of Bridgeport, Conn.; Miss Mary Jane Morin of Bennington; Mrs. Robert (Rita) Cole of Meriden, Conn., and Mrs. Thomas (Virginia) Ayer of Bennington; six sons, John S. Morin of San Bernardino, Calif.; Gerard Morin Sr. of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; George Morin of Bennington; Richard of Schenectady; John D. Morin of Bennington and Charles of Schenectady; one brother, Paul E. Morin of Montreal, Canada; 27 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, also nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 am with a prayer Thursday at Mahar & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Requiem High Mass at 9 in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. There will be recitation of the Rosary at the funeral home at 8 pm Wednesday.
