Singer. A native of Akron, Ohio she was involved in the Akron/Cleveland area music scene which spawned groups such as Devo and the Dead Boys. When friend Chris Bulter wrote ‘I Know What Boys Like' in 1977 he performed every instrument on the track, and recruited Donahue to handle the vocals. ‘I Know What Boys Like' ended up landing them a contract with Island/Polygram. The quickly formed band, The Waitresses, made their live debut on New Year's Eve 1980 which was followed by their debut album, 'Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful.' They contributed the track ‘Christmas Wrapping' to a Ze Records holiday release in 1981. Released as a single in early 1982, ‘I Know What Boys Like' was a cult hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. Although it only reached number 62 in America, it did make the Top Ten in Australia. Its reception earned the band an invitation to perform the title theme to the television series ‘Square Pegs' which appeared on their EP ‘I Could Rule the World if I Could Only Get the Parts.' Donahue's vocals were hailed as droll, detached, and authentically feminist. During the recording of the second Waitresses' album, ‘Bruiseology' interpersonal tensions temporarily drove Donahue out of the band. Although she returned to finish the record, the band never put out another. She later earned a credit on the Alice Cooper album ‘Zipper Catches Skin' but then focused her attention in the Artists and Repertoire division of the record label and spent the rest of her career on artist development and scouting talent. A heavy smoker for her entire adult life, she was diagnosed with lung cancer, and after a year long fight, she succumbed at age 40. (bio by: Iola)
