Mrs. Rhiney Smits (Katherine Gyslma) (sic), who passed away on December 7, was born in Brontgrom, Netherlands on Nov 29, 1874. In 1893 she was united in marriage with Rhiney Smits of Friesland. He preceeded her in death on Jan 2For 37 years they lived at Friesland, for 5 years near Waupun, and the last 18 years in Randolph. At first they were members of the Friesland Reformed Church and later joined the Randolph Reformed Church.
She is survived by nine children, 19 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. One child passed away in infancy. Surviving children are Mrs. Hattie Sommers, Samuel, Mrs. Tena Tamminga, Mrs. Ida DeYoung, Mrs. Paulina Stiemsma, Mrs. Anna Tamminga, John, William, and Mrs. Clara Crowley.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Reformed Church in Randolph on Friday, Dec. 10 with Rev. R.R. Van Farowe officiating. Burial was in the Friesland cemetery.
Catheren was born Trijntje Bijlsma in Brantgum, Westdongeradeel, Netheralands to Paulus Reinders Bijlsma and Hittje Wybes Sijens on 29 Nov 1874. She and older brother Wybe (William) came to America and settled in the Alto area.
