Thelma Lucille Snowden was born in Lemoore, California on February 18th, 1922. She was the ninth of twelve children born to Hazel and Llewyllyn Adkins. After living briefly in Fresno, Broderick, and Princeton, the Adkins family moved to Durham in 1927. Thelma attended grammar school and high school in Durham.
On July 1st, 1938, Thelma and John Snowden were married at the adobe church in Durham. Except for brief stays in Nord and Chico, they lived in the Durham area all their married lives. For many years, Thelma worked as a nut-sorter for Durham area almond farmers, the H. Meyer Nut Company, and the Continental Nut Company.
Thelma's greatest pleasure in life was to be with her children and grandchildren; for she was a tender and loving mother. She enjoyed visiting other family members and friends. She continued to live in Durham after the death of John in 1988. Her happiest years after John's death were when she was living with her daughter and granddaughter.
Thelma died on September 1st, 2013 of old age and the impacts of Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her son James Snowden; her daughter Shirley Gallaway; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her sister Maxine Killingsworth.
Thelma will be buried next to John in the Dayton Cemetery. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, September 9th, 2013.
