Watson spent his early boyhood days on the family farm near Eaton, Delaware County, Indiana. He graduated from Eaton High school in 1921 and attended Indiana and Purdue Universities. He was employed by the Holland Furnace Company in Indianapolis and he and his wife lived there until his transfer to Goshen, Indiana in December 1929. Watson moved to Lansing, Michigan in 1934 where he was employed by General Motor Corporation. During World War II, Watson was a supervisor at the Nash-Kelvinator plant in Lansing where blades were manufactored for airplanes. After the war, the family moved to Detroit Michigan, where he was a supervisor at Midland Steel Corporation. After the death of his parents, Watson acquired 100 acres of land formerly owned by his parents. He and his family moved back to Delaware County in 1949. He build a house and farmed this 100 acres in Union Township. He also held a supervisory position at Warner Machine Products in Muncie. Watson was a member of the Eaton Methodist Church, Eaton Masonic Lodge 606, F&AM and past president of the Eaton Lions Club.
Watson was the son of Ellsworth and Edna(Craw) Carter. He married Elleen Faye Touhey, daughter of John and Ida M. (Nicely) Touhey on April 21, 1926 in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. Watson and Elleen had one child.
