Edward P Nichols; age 85; born Brewer ME; died San Pedro CA
Maternal Grandfather
Captain Edward Payson Nichols (1844-1899) wrote and published "The Ocean Chronicle" on board the Bark Clara and the Ship Frank Pendleton from 1878 to 1891. On each of his voyages Captain Nichols, assisted by his family, wrote and printed this small newspaper on his own press at sea, which he then distributed to his friends once back at port. His newspapers may be found at the Penobscot Marine Museum, Searsport, Maine.
The Nichol's newspaper was purportedly the only one published at sea on a sailing vessel, with the exception of a few issues of "The Rolling Billow" & "Garlic Pill" printed onboard by his daughters Nancy Pendleton (1875-1941), Maud Evelyn (1976-1956), & Grace Louise (1878-1972), who, along with their mother, Martha Mills Nichols(1843-1922), went to sea with their father.
Paternal Grandfather. In 1881, the family barely escaped with their lives when the Bark Clara shipwrecked in a severe storm near the Cape of Good Hope.
Captain George Amos Nichols (1848-1897)
