Ret. Lt. Colonel J.W. Mankin, 78, of Antioch, TN, formerly of Crossville, passed away July 23, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Nashville, TN. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Cookeville, TN, with John Huestis officiating. Burial will be July 28 at 10 a.m. in the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville.
Visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Woodfin Chapel in Smyrna, TN.
Lt. Col. Mankin was born July 16, 1922, in Davidson County, the son of the late Jasper William and Lyda Bell Wilder Mankin.
He was retired from the U.S. Army, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was an Army chaplain for 16 years, and a minister of the Church of Christ nationwide for many years. He established a relief organization to help support the Amerasian children who were left behind when Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines was closed.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Morningstar Mankin of Antioch; children, Susan Sparks of Atlanta, GA, and Nadia Craig of Christiana, TN, Tommy Mankin of Virginia Beach, VA, Joe Morrison and John Morrison, both of Oklahoma City, OK, and James Morrison of Menlo Park, CA; brothers, Clif Mankin of Woodbury, TN, and Lonnie Mankin of Tucker, GA; sisters, Elsie Ragsdale of West Point, GA, Kay Ferrell of Smyrna and Billie Wilson of Nashville; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Karl Mankin.
