Newton Alexander McCully

United States Navy Vice Admiral. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1887, and after graduation he was ordered to duty in the Mediterranean Sea. He served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine insurrection and was attached to Russian forces during the siege of Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War. After serving as United States naval attaché to Russia from 1914 to 1917, he commanded a patrol squadron off the French coast in 1918 after the United States entered World War I. He was the commander of the United States naval forces off Russia during 1918 and 1919, received a promotion Rear Admiral in 1918, and served as a special agent for the United States State Department in Southern Russian. In 1927 he was appointed the commanding officer of the Sixth Naval District, serving in that capacity until 1931 when he retired. (bio by: Saratoga)
