He enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 28, 1862. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action on August 21, 1864 at Second Battle of Weldon Railroad, Virginia, during the Siege of Petersburg. His citation reads simply "Capture of flag of 24th North Carolina Volunteers (C.S.A.).". His Medal was awarded to him on September 6, 1864, and was honorably mustered out on June 24, 1865.
